Botanical Society of Scotland

The Botanical Society of Scotland (BSS) är den nationella vetenskapliga föreningen för botaniker i Skottland . Föreningens mål är att främja kunskap om växter, alger och svampar. Sällskapets [1] verksamhet inkluderar föreläsningar (främst hållna i Edinburgh, men även i andra skotska städer), symposier, studiebesök, fältprojekt och ett årligt möte som hålls i samarbete med Botanical Society of Great Britain and Ireland för att utbyta information mellan botaniker som arbetar inom olika områden. Sällskapet publicerar ett nyhetsbrev vartannat år - BSS News och den vetenskapliga tidskriften Ecology and Plant Diversity . Sällskapet är nära förknippat med Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh och skotska universitet. [2]

Historik

Sällskapet grundades den 8 februari 1836 som Edinburgh Botanical Society . Dess grundare var professor Edward Forbes , professor John Hutton Balfour och Dr. Richard Parnell. [3]

År 1935 slogs Edinburgh Botanical Society samman med Scottish Cryptogamic Society, grundat 1875, och inkluderade dess namn i dess namn. [4] Dess namn ändrades igen 1991 till Botanical Society of Scotland, som inkluderar Cryptogamic Society of Scotland. Botanical Society of Scotland har varit en chartrad välgörenhetsorganisation i Skottland sedan 19 februari 1918 och blev Scottish Charitable Associated Organisation (SCIO) den 15 april 2014 (nr SC016283).

Händelser

BSS är det enda brittiska botaniska samhället med ett starkt intresse för blommande och icke-blommande växter (t.ex. ormbunkar, mossor och alger) och svampar. Detta breda utbud av intressen återspeglas i hans program med månatliga föreläsningar under vintermånaderna, huvudsakligen i Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh. Under sommaren och hösten hålls fältmöten för att utforska växter i hela Skottland. BSS håller också kurser i specialiserade ämnen som anläggningsidentifiering. Ett årsmöte, Scottish Botanists' Conference, äger rum varje höst och hålls i samarbete med BSBI, BSS och Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh. Då och då hålls symposier och konferenser om specifika ämnen som växtfenologi.

Publikationer

The Botanical Society of Edinburgh publicerade sin första tidskrift Proceedings of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh från 1844 till 1990. Denna ersattes 1991 av Botanical Journal of Scotland , publicerad av Edinburgh University Press för att återspegla samhällets namnbyte till "Botanical Society of Scotland" samma år. 2008, för att ge tidskriften internationell dragningskraft, ersattes Scottish Botanical Journal i sin tur av Ecology and Plant Diversity , publicerad av Taylor & Francis . [5] Växtekologi och mångfald inkluderades i Scopus 2010, och 2011 fick den sin första effektfaktor på 2,053.
