Den femte British Academy Video Games Awards ägde rum på Hilton Hotel i London den 10 mars 2009 . Den innehöll datorspel som släpptes mellan 26 oktober 2007 och 31 december 2008 . Ledare i antalet mottagna utmärkelser var Call of Duty 4 , som fick tre priser.
Spelen presenterades i 15 nomineringar, varav 14 val av det bästa spelet tillhörde juryn: Gameplay, Casual, Sports, Story and Character, Strategy, Best use of Audio, New Talent, Multiplayer, Best Technical Achievement, Original Score , Handheld, Artistic Achievement , Bästa action och äventyr och Bästa spel. Spel i den sista, femtonde kategorin - People's Choice, valdes av spelgemenskapen.
De främsta överraskningarna under ceremonin var Super Mario Galaxys seger i nomineringen av bästa spel och misslyckandet av Grand Theft Auto IV , nominerad i sju kategorier (som leder, tillsammans med Call of Duty 4 , i antalet nomineringar) och inte vinnande en enda utmärkelse.
